Jobs, Jobs, Jobs Project - activities

With the financial support of the European Commission's EuropeAid

A key component of the three-year Jobs, Jobs, Jobs project was the development of 8 case studies in countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America and 4 briefings on key topics. These materials feed a wide range of advocacy activities including seminars and campaign materials in Italy, Sweden, UK, Estonia and Belgium which targeted decision-makers, young people, students as well as workers in those sectors most affected by globalisation.

Sweden

The Olof Palme Center organised a series of annual seminars mainly targeting young people and activists within Swedish labour movement.

UK

War on Want organised a photo exhibition and several workshops at different universities in the UK to present the findings of the case studies on the informal economy.

Italy

Progetto Sviluppo organised 10 workshops with students and teachers in different Italian universities and 10 information days in different work places in Italy. Trade union organisation ISCOS organised four seminars in Fiesole involving trade unionists in July 2007. Moreover the photo exhibition 'Time for Decent Work' was widely circulated throughout the country.

Estonia

The Johannes Mihkelson Centre organised an annual conference in Estonia on different aspects of decent work. One conference also looked at the Constitutional Treaty and its impact the external policy of the EU.

Round Tables in Brussels

SOLIDAR organised 8 Round Tables with key decision makers to discuss the recommendations from the case studies and the general analysis of EU external policies throughout the three-year project period.

International Conference

On Monday 15 September, the Final Jobs Jobs Jobs Conference ‘Globalising Decent Work: from political will to implementation strategies took place at the European Parliament (hosted by Josep Borrell MEP).

Since the 2006 European Commission Communication ‘Promoting decent work for all: The EU contribution to the implementation of the decent work agenda in the world’, the commitment to Decent Work has increased, yet lots of challenges are to be faced in Europe and outside. The event aims to give inputs to the debate following the recent European Commission Report on ‘The EU contribution to the promotion of decent work in the world’ and the ‘Renewed Social Agenda’ (July 2008) identifying challenges and strategies to move from institutional commitments to implementation strategies to make decent work real for people inside and outside Europe.

With this aim SOLIDAR Global Network partner organisation from Africa, Asia and Latin America took part in the debate bringing their perspective on effective implementation of the commitment to make Decent Work real for all.

Although the Jobs, Jobs, Jobs project has now finished, SOLIDAR is still actively participating in advocacy around the topic of Decent Work - see more in the Decent Work Decent Life campaign pages.
