This week SOLIDAR participated in the Food, Agriculture, Trade and Environment (FATE) Forum organised by CONCORD to discuss in-depth policy coherence for development in EU policy-making. The main focus was how to promote sustainable (economic, social, environmental and equitable) food systems which can ensure global food security.
At the conference, SOLIDAR and their partners pointed out that international trade and agricultural agreements often have a negative impact on the living conditions of people living in developing countries. To eradicate poverty and famine, policy coherence for development should be based on the principles of solidarity, human rights, justice and democracy. Additionally, the actual causes of poverty must be addressed, in combination with the promotion of sustainable economic and social development.
