Decent Work & Quality Jobs in Europe

Over the last 50 years the fundamental pillars of decent work, as defined by the International Labour Organization (ILO), have been firmly established in the EU: anti-discrimination directives, the principle of gender equality, and the right of every citizen to health care and social services, and labour laws. Social dialogue with employers and trade unions is also well established and safeguards important labour rights.

However, today’s labour markets are changing and an increasing number of people are working in precarious working conditions, with in-work poverty, part-time or short-term contracts, in the informal economy, or as undocumented migrants from third countries. These workers have limited individual and collective labour rights and lower social protection and security as existing safeguards fail to sufficiently address these new forms of work and employment.

SOLIDAR is working on a project “Decent Work for all – a key for Effective Industrial Relations” to contribute to this debate and broaden the knowledge base on legal developments and practices at local, regional, national and European level that might risk weakening working conditions and social dialogue.
