What? SOLIDAR Round Table Investing in people: the Importance of Social Infrastructures

Hosted by Bernadette Vergnaud (S&D)
Co-chairs: Proinsias De Rossa (S&D) & Elisabeth Schroedter (Greens/EFA)

With interventions on social realities by SOLIDAR members Arbeiterwohlfahrt (DE) and CSV (UK)

When? 4 November 2009, 12.30-14.00

Where? European Parliament Brussels, Room A5G305

Why? The investment in sustainable social infrastructures is essential, especially amidst an unprecedented economic crisis. Without appropriate financing, comprehensive regulation, adequate legal and policy frameworks, and competition based on quality, European citizens and in particular vulnerable groups will not be able to benefit from quality social, health, employment and education services. Furthermore, the involvement of volunteers is crucial for the development of innovative solutions, supports social inclusion and fosters social cohesion.

What are the objectives? SOLIDAR intends to promote the debate between policy makers and social NGOs on issues of common interest and concern related to social services and volunteering. The Round Table will address the following questions:

  • How can we move towards policy priorities and a policy framework supportive of the objectives mentioned above and starting from the needs and expectations of those needing support?
  • How to make volunteering an enriching experience and how to fully recognise volunteers’ involvement to promote social inclusion and social cohesion?

What is SOLIDAR’s Together for Social Europe campaign? Throughout this European Parliament elections year, SOLIDAR -together with a number of members from all across Europe -has been carrying out theTogether for Social Europe campaign. It aims to improve European decision makers knowledge of the social realities of people coming from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, people who SOLIDAR member organisations work with and provide services for, based on the experiences of social workers working with them on a daily basis. What next? On 2 December 2009 SOLIDAR will organise another Round Table in the EP focusing on social/active inclusion and decent work.
