Between October 10th and 12th, the Asia-Europe People’s Forum (AEPF) held its 10th Forum in Milan under the title “Towards a Just and Inclusive Asia and Europe - Building States of Citizens for Citizens”. Over 400 people from 42 countries and representing community based organizations, social movements, NGOs and Trade Unions came together to discuss and find convergences around an alternative development paradigm. The discussions were structured around five main areas: (1) Socially Just Trade and Investment; (2) Universal and Transformative Social Protection – Guaranteed Decent Work and Sustainable Livelihoods, Access to Essential Services and Social Security for All; (3) Food Sovereignty and Sustainable Land and Natural Resource Management; (4) Climate Justice, Sustainable Energy Production and Zero Waste; (5) Peace and Security.
The conclusions and the proposals coming out from two days and a half of intense work were presented to the ASEM Governments by ARCI’s honorary President, Luciana Castellina and Rex Varona from the Migrant Forum Asia. One key element of the alternative proposed is the implementation of “social protection systems that are universal, comprehensive, rights-based, state-driven, legislated, and with mechanisms for public participation and control”.
Since 2007, SOLIDAR is active, with its members, partners, the European Working Group on Decent Work and Social Protection in Development Cooperation and the more recent Global Coalition for Social Protection Floors, to advocate for Social Protection for all.
As part of this work, between 3 and 7 November, in the framework of the UNIVERSAL SOCIAL PROTECTION ADVOCACY TOUR, SOLIDAR will host a delegation of CSOs coming from eight different countries to demand EU institution to support the inclusion of the implementation, by 2030, of universal and comprehensive social protection systems and nationally-defined social protection floors in the post-2015 development cooperation framework.
