EMPL report: strengthening employment and social considerations in the AGS2014

Members of the Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL) Committee of the European Parliament yesterday 9 January discussed a draft report on Employment and Social Aspects in the Annual Growth Survey 2014.

SOLIDAR agrees with MEP Sergio Gutiérrez Prieto (S&D, Spain), rapporteur of the own-initiative report, that it is important to strengthen the position of the Parliament in the overall European Semester process in order to put more emphasis on the need to tackle the social consequences of the economic crisis and to provide sustainable and inclusive growth solutions, promoting quality employment and raising social standards. The draft report also stresses the importance of strengthening the democratic legitimacy of the European Semester by involving social partners and civil society members at all levels in order to create democratic consensus on decisions and reforms.

In SOLIDAR’s view, promoting quality employment and strengthening social consolidation should be the EU’s priority, in line with the Europe 2020 Strategy, as also highlighted in our briefing ‘European Semester 2014: Ensure Social Progress’. We therefore welcome the EMPL Committee initiative.
