Social Progress Watch 2015 Country Report | Greece

Greece continues to be challenged by a high unemployment rate, strained health and social services, and an inefficient and poor quality education system. These challenges have been described by the European Commission in great detail, and the SOLIDAR EU Strategy Group in Greece supports its findings. However, our Strategy Group and a study carried out for the European Parliament are critical of the austerity measures that are being taken, which more often than not rely on cost-cutting and they thereby reinforce the downward pressure on public services. A positive signal in Greece is the growth of the social economy and the rise of active citizenship and volunteering, even though these trends are also plagued by a lack of financial support from the government.
