Campaign launch at the World Social Forum, 2007
The worldwide campaign was launched on 21 January 2007 in Nairobi, Kenya at the World Social Forum (WSF). Over 50 activities took place in Nairobi under the banner of Decent Work, Decent Life organised by SOLIDAR member organisations and partners. These included the launch of a campaign for Decent Work in football in the lead up to 2010 World Cup in South Africa which focuses initially on the construction sector. This campaign will mobilise football fans worldwide to put pressure on FIFA, the South African government and the companies contracted to build and/or renovate the ten stadiums required for the staging of the Cup to form agreements with the workers employed to ensure that they carry out the work in decent conditions and with fair remuneration.
Decent Work at the World Economic Forum, 2007
The campaign next took its message from Nairobi to the World Economic Forum held 24-28 January 2007 in Davos, Switzerland in order to ensure that it was heard by the business community, the organisations leading the campaign published an article in the Swiss press (Le Temps, Geneva) outlining their position and urging action.
Youth Action for Decent Work!
Ahead of the G8 summit held in Heiligendamm, Germany 6-8 June, 200 young people from all six continents met in Berlin 1-2 June for a conference organised by the Decent Work campaign and German Trade Union DGB to discuss issues and strategies to counter unemployment, precarity, the informalisation of the economy, private equity, and many other barriers to decent work.
In a final declaration including ten demands, young people called on the G8 leaders to urgently address the economic and social issues which keep young people out of work or in precarious and insecure jobs without protection. With plans for campaigns around the Beijing 2008 Olympics and the World Cup 2010, as well as a call for a World Decent Work Day (7 October 2008), participants vowed to pursue their agenda in all fora and to hold decision-makers to their promises on aid, debt and trade.
