A step forward to enforce labour and social standards in EU trade agreements?

On Wednesday 25 October France published its “action plan” on ensuring that trade deals promote sustainability and remain acceptable to the public. Although focused on the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), it includes elements that have an impact for future EU trade deals as well regarding the enforceability of standards. SOLIDAR has been vocal on the need to make labour and social standards enforceable, and has been supporting the dialogue between unionists and members of the European Parliament regarding the Ecuador’s accession to the EU's free trade agreement with Colombia and Peru. France’s proposal opens the door to debate, but one can question whether Macron’s approach is sound. SOLIDAR will follow the developments closely.
