SOLIDAR has been saddened to hear that Silver Rose Award laureate Morgan Tsvangirai has passed away after battling with cancer and passes its condolences to his family and beloved ones. The charismatic mineworker, trade union leader and opposition politician received the award in 2001 for his enduring commitment to democracy and human rights in Zimbabwe; he continuously risked his life by standing up against the dictatorship of Robert Mugabe. His passing away comes at an unfortunate moment for the people of Zimbabwe, who seek to elect a new president later this year. SOLIDAR hopes that the opposition will remain united and be able to ensure a transition to the rule of true democratic law, to end misery and poverty through a real redistribution of wealth.
