After a few years in which the European Union (EU) has focused most of its efforts on the partnership with Africa, the EU is working to renew its relations with Latin America and the Caribbean, supported by the upcoming EU – CELAC Summit between high representatives of the two regions in July 2023.
As a first step, the EU launched an open consultation on “A New Agenda for EU relations with Latin America and the Caribbean”, aiming to gather the inputs from stakeholders to present their priorities for the partnership between the two regions. SOLIDAR members and its partners, based on their extensive experience in Latin America, developed and submitted a response focused on the following priorities:
· The failure of the economic model demonstrated by the high rates of inequality across the region.
· The weakening of the rule of law and the regression of the democratic space.
· The high rates of corruption, environmental abuses, feminicides and human rights violations.
We will continue our advocacy work towards the EU – CELAC Summit and the renew partnership between the two regions, by developing a position paper that will be presented in our upcoming regional exchange that will take place in Guatemala from 28 to 30 March.
