Support the United Nations Social Protection Floor Initiative, says Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights

In his report presented this week to the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Professor Philip Alston, urged Governments around the world to embrace the United Nations Social Protection Floor Initiative (SPFI) to ensure guaranteed basic income security and access to essential social services for all.

Rapporteur Alston denounced the existing ambivalence of the World Bank, reluctant to really support the SPFI and which prefers instead to focus on short terms safety nets measures, as a major obstacle to the full realisation of the right to access Universal Social Protection Floors.

SOLIDAR supports Rapporteur Alston’s call to all international actors to support the SPFI and a strong Human Rights language within the post-2015 development cooperation framework.
