The peaceful mobilisations by Colombian citizens that have been carried out since 21 November in several cities and municipalities of the country, within the framework of the National Strike, are part of the legitimate right of the Colombian people to take part in public gatherings and demonstrations, as enshrined in article 37 of the Political Constitution.
The reports of arbitrary detentions and legal persecution, criminalisation of social protest and excessive use of force by some members of the Police Forces, particularly against young people and students, leading to the death of the young Dilan Cruz, are extremely worrying.
In this context of violence, SOLIDAR joins Movimiento por la Paz and other international civil society organisations that work and have a presence in Colombia, in calling on the Colombian authorities to ensure citizens who decide to do so, are guaranteed the right to express their opinion through public gatherings and demonstrations without fear.
