belonging as a right: solidar’s vision for reimagining migration in europe
SOLIDAR is increasingly alarmed by rising hostile narratives around migration across Europe and a policy trend – both at Member State and EU levels – towards securitisation of migration policy. These trends of deterrence, externalisation and returns emerge at the expense of a rights-based approach to people on the move. In this context, we put forward our vision of a different approach to migration: one rooted in human rights, democratic participation and welcoming societies. This vision asserts that migration should be approached not as a threat, but as a natural part of our societies and as a matter of dignity, equality and global justice.
The vision was developed alongside our organisational strategy for 2026-29 in order to underpin our work for this coming strategy period. The vision also fed into the paper we launched at the end of 2025, ‘Realising fair and just working conditions for migrant workers in Europe’ which explored the role of the European Pillar of Social Rights in closing the gap in access to the protection of rights and justice which impact migrant workers.
