Let’s Tax the Rich – Sign this European Citizens’ Initiative for a fairer, more sustainable world

April 15, 2024

The citizens’ initiative urges the European Commission to implement a European wealth tax, creating a new revenue source for the European Union. This revenue would support European environmental and social policies, as well as development cooperation, with shared financing from Member States. It aims to fight climate change, inequality, and ensure shared responsibility among European citizens.

There is a significant wealth disparity on a global scale, with the wealthiest 1% of the world’s population possessing nearly half of the total wealth. This disproportionate accumulation of wealth among a small segment of the population not only accentuates socioeconomic inequality but also has far-reaching environmental implications. This same fraction of ultra-rich individuals is responsible for emitting a disproportionately large amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, surpassing the collective emissions of the poorest half of the global population. This correlation underscores the intertwined nature of economic disparity and environmental degradation, highlighting the urgent need for equitable solutions to address both issues simultaneously. 1 million signatures are needed to force the European Commission to make a proposal. More info on this initiative.
