World Human Rights Day: Free Lee Cheuk-yan!

On World Human Rights Day, SOLIDAR joins Amnesty International, the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute, the International Trade Union Confederation, and other organizations’ call on the Hong Kong government to release Chow Hang-tung and Lee Cheuk-yan.

We raise the following demands to the Hong Kong government:

  1. Drop all charges against Lee Cheuk-yan.
  1. Drop all charges against Chow Hang-tung who faces similar accusations.
  1. Release all trade unionists and activists imprisoned for exercising their rights.
  1. Repeal the National Security Law (NSL) and the National Security Ordinance (NSO).
  1. Respect international human rights standards, including freedom of association and expression.

Former General Secretary of the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (HKCTU) and former chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movement in China, throughout his life, Lee Cheuk-yan has organised and worked to advance and protect workers’ rights in a context where the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and association are significantly curtailed. For his long-standing work as a trade union leader, Comrade Lee was symbolically awarded the Silver Rose Lifetime Achievement Award while he was in jail for his outstanding contributions and perseverance in building the independent trade union movement in Hong Kong, upholding peace and non-violent struggles in the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong and mainland China. He serves as an example for all of us and the need for personal commitment, dedication and struggle to advance our progressive values”, said the Silver Rose Jury.

#Free Lee Cheuk-yan is an international campaign led by the global trade union movement, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Lee Cheuk-yan, a lifelong champion of workers’ rights and democracy in Hong Kong. More here https://www.ituc-csi.org/free-lee-cheuk-yan
