READJUST: JUST TRANSITION TO A GREEN AND DIGITAL FUTURE FOR ALL
WHAT IS THE PROJECT ABOUT?
The READJUST project strives to address the inequalities created or exacerbated by the twin transitions policies and aims to suggest policy options for overcoming the potential trade-offs between efficiency and equality in the twin transition in the key sectors of mobility and agri-food.
Bringing together nine partners from across Europe – YAGHMA (The Netherlands), VTT – Technical Research Centre of Finland (Finland), University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), EIT Urban Mobility (Spain), EIT Food (Belgium), 4CF – The Futures Literacy Company (Poland), EURICE – European Research and Project Office (Germany), Fraunhofer ISI (Germany) and SOLIDAR (Belgium)- the consortium combines expertise in the fields of sociology, political science, as well as analytics, spatial mapping, and system thinking, providing an interdisciplinary approach and ensuring impact both at international and local level, advancing fairer and more inclusive transitions across Europe.
WHY?
Policies driving green and digital transitions, the so-called twin transitions, are intended to level the playing field to achieve the European Growth Model, deliver on the EU Green Deal and make the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals a reality. When well-designed, these transitions can pave an efficient path toward climate neutrality and sustainable prosperity.
Yet, they have also produced unintended and unforeseen consequences such as creating new inequalities and aggravating existing ones. Social groups already at risk in the EU’s most vulnerable regions are primarily affected. To address these challenges, public authorities and policy makers at local, national and European levels need a robust, evidence-based understanding of these inequalities, where and how they originate, and practical strategies to prevent and mitigate them.
HOW?
READJUST aims to track, assess, analyse and address a wide range of aspects of intended and unintended inequalities triggered by twin transitions policies, with a particular focus on the mobility and food-agricultural sector.
In detail, the following objectives will be pursued to achieving this goal:
- Providing an evidence-based understanding of inequalities related to the twin transitions;
- Creating the READJUST Observatory, through which policymakers receive access to a Policy Tracker Tool that contains a library of policy actions as well as a collection of best practices, an Equality Self-Assessment Tool to support policy and performance assessments against equality criteria, and the READJUST Inequality Index for a Green and Digital Transition, that will enable them to better understand the detrimental impacts of the transitions on different groups within society;
- Developing the READJUST Roadmap for Policy Action on Equality in Twin Transition (PAET), created based on existing frameworks for evaluating policies related to the twin transitions and their impact on inequalities and vulnerabilities.
